Aquatic Invasive Weeds

There are a number of Aquatic Invasive weeds which have become a problem in the UK. In most cases they have been introduced more recently into the wild by the public due to lack of knowledge.

They were introduced as plants for contained aquatic environments to do specific jobs such as oxygenation. However, some have been released and it is now increasingly important to catch them quickly to prevent further spread. All aquatic treatments need to be carried out by a trained professional with the correct qualification and needs to be approved by the Environment Agency. The key species that the Environment Agency is concerned with at present are listed below:

How to identify them?

Why are they a problem?

Aquatic environments are fragile and therefore controlling against aggressive invasive weeds in such areas is severely limited. Like most invasive weeds they out compete the native species and, in case of aquatics, can impede the flow of vital drainage channels causing flooding.
